Moerdijk & F. van Nieulande), 2002, The Pliocene Amphineura and Bivalvia (Palaeotaxodonta and Pteriomorphia) from Kallo and Doel (Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium).(100 textpages, 16 textfigures, 3 tables, 34 plates)Summary: This work describes part of the molluscan fauna found in dock works in Kallo and Doel (both Beveren, Oost-Vlaanderen province, Belgium). The sections from Kallo, published by MARQUET (1998) are updated and that of the "Deurganckdok" in Doel is described. The presence of the Luchtbal Sand Member is recorded here for the first time from the left Scheldt bank. Because of the sedimentation discontinuity above and below this Member, the Luchtbal Sand is here considered as a separate Formation, contemporaneous with the British Coralline Crag Formation. In sand from a boring below building level, a Miocene fauna was observed, probably belonging to the Edegem Sand Member. Four species of Amphineura and 56 of Palaeotaxodonta and Pteriomorphia are recorded from the Kallo and Doel Pliocene. Of these, six species are new for the Pliocene of Belgium, two taxa, Yoldia heeringi sp. nov. and Rhomboidella grigisi sp. nov., is newly described. All species encountered are described and their systematics, range and ecology are discussed. Seven species from the Miocene were found, always ex situ. |
